About this course

This is the core course of the programme. It sets out how fitness to practise works across the United Kingdom and provides the foundation for the later courses on insight, reflection, remediation and preventing recurrence, so that those courses can build on it rather than repeat it.

Fitness to practise is the framework through which the UK healthcare regulators protect the public, maintain public confidence, and uphold professional standards. This course explains what fitness to practise means, why regulators intervene, how concerns arise and are assessed, the central concept of current impairment, the regulatory process and possible outcomes, and how professional improvement, insight, and strengthened practice affect regulatory decision-making. It uses a shared core plus regulator-specific differences model, because the UK does not have a single fitness-to-practise procedure: each regulator operates its own process, terminology, and powers.

What you will learn

  • what fitness to practise actually means in the UK, and why regulators intervene;
  • the difference between error, poor performance, misconduct, a health concern, and impairment;
  • how concerns arise, how regulators assess evidence, and the central concept of current impairment;
  • public protection and public confidence as the purposes of regulation;
  • regulatory investigation, the professional response, interim measures, hearings, and possible outcomes;
  • conditions, suspension, and removal, and the review of restrictions;
  • how professional improvement, insight, and strengthened practice affect regulatory decision-making; and
  • how fitness to practise connects with the later insight, reflection, remediation, and prevent-recurrence pathway.
